Voter Laws and Registration Deadlines

You must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Be a resident of Iowa
  • Be at least 17- 1/2 years old (you must be 18 to vote)
  • Not have been convicted of a felony (or have had your rights restored)
  • Not currently be judged “mentally incompetent” by a court
  • Not claim the right to vote in more than one place
  • Give up the right to vote in any other place
  • Photo ID required (as of January 1, 2018)
  • Early Voting in Person or by Mail

Registration Deadline: Must be delivered by 5 p.m. 10 days before the election, if it is a state primary or general election; 11 days before all others. Registration forms which are postmarked 15 or more days before an election are considered on time even if received after the deadline.

NOTE: Same day registration now allowed. As of January 1, 2008, you may register to vote on Election Day at the polling place for the precinct you currently live in. If you register to vote on Election Day, you will be required to show proof of identity and residency.
